All orthodontic retainers and appliances tend to accumulate food particles, plaque and tartar just like teeth do. Every time you brush your teeth, brush your retainer.
Removable retainers should be taken out during eating, contact sports and when you brush your teeth.
Never bite it into place, but use your fingers to push it in gently. To remove, gently push or pull the retainer (depending on the upper or lower retainer).
To clean retainers, remove them first and brush them using your toothbrush and toothpaste.
Use warm or cool water. Never use HOT water as this may warp the retainer.
The safest place for your retainer is in your mouth.
If not using the retainers then they should always be kept in their case. There is a great risk of losing retainer if they are wrapped in tissues after you remove them from your mouth.
